The student’s work should be presented in an ESSAY of around 1200 words. 


Referencing:


The essay should include a list of references (print and electronic) at the end in addition to in-text referencing as per the requirements of the Harvard Referencing System. Proper referencing is a serious academic requirement and skill and will be rewarded accordingly.


Writing and Discussion Topic:


Cultural encounters can prove to be very enriching to all those involved, yet could prove very confusing and disrupting. In most cases these encounters lead to a conflict of values, both at the individual and societal levels. Explore how cultural encounters are manifested in literary works, specifically short stories from An Anthology of Short Stories from Five Continents, with particular reference to The Distant Past by William Trevor and In Cuba I was a German Shepherd by Ana Menendez. Both these stories talk of “refugees”, physically and/or emotionally, Cuban “exiles” in the US and Anglicans who once “belonged” in Ireland.


In the process of answering the TMA, you should make sure to include the below five sub questions: 


1)  How is the concept of cultural encounter treated similarly in the two short stories: The Distant Past and In Cuba I was a German Shepherd? 


2) Are the authors, William Trevor and Ana Menendez, aware of the cultural encounter theme? How do they manifest that awareness?


3) Are the main characters in both short stories aware of the cultural encounter theme? What clues do they provide of such awareness? How similar are their expressions of this awareness?


4) How do the “incidents” of the Friday visit to town in The Distant Past and the arrival of the white busses in In Cuba I was a German Shepherd highlight the theme of cultural encounter?


5) How does the usage of “contrasts” (present versus past, now versus then) throughout the short stories help in highlighting the theme of cultural encounter?

The construction of any reputation is a complex process. The factors involved in shaping reputations remain varied, and the interplay of these factors adds to the complexity of the process. History tells us of leaders who have myths built around them and who have had up to this very day their reputations contested. Sometimes, and by some, these leaders are called nation builders, mass murderers, usurpers etc. Their memory lives on and so does the controversy surrounding them. The course book, Reputations deals with Cleopatra and Stalin as examples. Choose one such iconic “leader” (do NOT choose Cleopatra or Stalin) and discuss the issues involved in process of his/her reputation formation. Pay attention to the factors that could have contributed to his/her contested reputation and the role historical sources are made to operate. First, you should read to build your understanding of the complex theme of reputation before focusing your attention on material that would help you address the subthemes numbered 1-5 below, as they apply to the leader of your choice:     


1) Identify the issues involved in setting the “leader” in his/her historical context.  


 


2) Discuss the role played by historical interpretation in shaping the “leader’s” reputation.  


 


3) Discuss how myths are constructed around this “leader”. 


 


4) Investigate the interplay of myth and history in constructing the “leader’s” reputation.

As you read through the article create one spray diagram to summarize the case content respecting the conventions, and techniques. Reflect on your diagram in no more than 200 words.  (15% marks).


(b) b*ased on what you learned in T205B concept file 04 section II “Control”, and b*ased on the content of the article, and taking “Fixing corporate culture” as your goal draw one closed loop control model diagram to show the various i*nputs, and the  transformation process,  that can lead to reaching this goal. You need to show all the components of the control model diagram,  the i*nputs’, processes, control (actuator, comparator, sensor), that can lead to goal achievement . Reflect on your diagram (15% marks)


 


(c) Using an essay format of no more than 2500 words, and b*ased on what you learned in T205B concept file 04 section I “Organizations are They Rational”, readings 01 and 07, section III “Structure”, section IV development, section V culture and climate, and section VI “Decision Making” and b*ased on the ideas put forth in the attached case study:


 


1- Discuss the concept of organizational goals and the three categories of goals, and assess the existence of goal displacement and pluralism at Toshiba. (Word Count 500; 15 Marks)

I. TMA Topic overview: Business Plan


 


 


One vehicle for acquiring an understanding of the entrepreneurial process is through the preparation of a start-up business plan. The focus of this TMA is to select a business idea and create a complete and persuasive mini- business plan. Writing a business plan requires you to ask tough questions about the nature of the business. 


• What are the benefits of your product or service? 


• What is the target market and how will you penetrate it? 


• How will you develop and produce the product or service? 


• What is required from the management team? 


• What are the risks of the venture and what can you do to reduce them? 


• What are the financial implications of the plan? 


• What resources, including funding, are required to successfully create the business plan?


 


II. TMA components (for essay paper and PowerPoint presentation)


 


A. The Written Plan: The body of the written business plan should be no more than 10 pages including the executive summary and all financial statements. Plans must include an explanation of the offering to investors that indicate the investment required, expected ROI, marketing plan, operations plan, and management team de**ion.

B. Business Plan Presentation: Strong written and oral skills greatly facilitate success in the business world. Those individuals that can effectively communicate their ideas will have an advantage over those that cannot. Your team will present your business plan to the class and, if applicable, participate in a business plan competition.


 


 


 


III. TMA Requirements


 


 


This TMA consists of 15% of your total course grade. It is a team project. Each team will consist of 4-5 students. The project is divided into two parts:


1. TMA essay paper (50 marks out of 100)


2. PowerPoint presentation (50 marks out of 100)


 


• The initial task of your team is to select and propose a business idea to the instructor for approval. 


• Students should arrange with their tutors in order to verify that no other team had selected the same idea for the project.


 


1. TMA Essay Paper (50 marks out of 100) (maximum 10 pages)


 


• Each team will work on the TMA paper as they would normally do with other courses, but this time in group. This is a good opportunity for students to learn a set of skills that are very important in the professional business world, such as time management, planning, communicating with others, etc.


• Each team is required to select a team leader. The TMA paper should be uploaded to the LMS by the team leader only. This is a very important requirement in order to avoid Turnitin similarities.  


• The names of all the team members should be written on the pt3 form, including the name of the team leader. All team members will receive the same mark on the TMA essay paper. Students are required to use the pt3 form provided on the LMS for this specific TMA.


• Students are expected to make sure the written TMA meets the following criteria:


o Plagiarism: It’s imperative that team members write the TMA using their own words. Plagiarism will be penalized depending on its severity and according to AOU plagiarism policy.


o Format:  team members are expected to write their answer in an essay format: introduction, body paragraph(s) and a conclusion. Failing to do so could result in the deduction of up to 2 marks from the total TMA paper mark. 


o Word count: TMAs are expected to be within the specified word count. A 10% deviation from word count limit is acceptable. Not adhering to specified word count could result in the deduction of up to 2 marks of the total TMA paper mark. 


o Referencing:  team members are expected to use the Harvard referencing style for in-text referencing and list of reference at the end. Failing to do so could result in the deduction of up to 2 marks of the total TMA paper mark.


o E-Library: team members are expected to use E-library sources to support their answers. A minimum of 3 sources is required. Failing to do so could result in the deduction of up to 2 marks of the total TMA paper mark.


 


 


2. PowerPoint Presentation (50 marks out of 100)


 


• Each team will prepare a PowerPoint presentation that reflects on the most important points discussed in the paper.


• Each team will be allowed a total of 15 minutes. 10 minutes for the presentation plus 5 minutes for Q&A and discussion.


• All team members should contribute equally. Each member should speak for approximately 2 minutes. The last team member to speak should lead a class discussion.


• Team members will be marked b*ased on the “Team presentation evaluation form”. Team members are advised to use this form as a b*aseline for preparing the presentation.


• Team members will receive the same mark on the PowerPoint presentation, given they have shown up and participated in the presentation. Team members who don’t show up or participate in the presentation will receive a zero on the presentation part. 


• Balanced participation in the presentation is one of the requirements mentioned in the presentation marking rubric.

PART B: Supply network (50 marks, 500 words)
 
Taking a recent purchase as an example, write an essay to discuss the supply network of your product from raw material until it arrives to the consumer. You are required to cover the following points in your essay/presentation:
1. Company overview, product overview, major competitors.
2. Stages of the product supply chain or network design, l*ocation of raw material in relation to the manufacturer, distributor, retailer and consumer, etc.
3. The relationship between suppliers and customers (first tier, second tier, etc.., horizontal or vertical integration (if any), levels of inventory and where it’s held.
4. Explanation of any problems and suggestions for further improvements of the supply chain.

Writing and Discussion Topic:


Cultural encounters can prove to be very enriching to all those involved, yet could prove very confusing and disrupting. In most cases these encounters lead to a conflict of values, both at the individual and societal levels. Explore how cultural encounters are manifested in literary works, specifically short stories from An Anthology of Short Stories from Five Continents, with particular reference to The Distant Past by William Trevor and In Cuba I was a German Shepherd by Ana Menendez. Both these stories talk of “refugees”, physically and/or emotionally, Cuban “exiles” in the US and Anglicans who once “belonged” in Ireland.


In the process of answering the TMA, you should make sure to include the below five sub questions: 


1)  How is the concept of cultural encounter treated similarly in the two short stories: The Distant Past and In Cuba I was a German Shepherd?

The construction of any reputation is a complex process. The factors involved in shaping reputations remain varied, and the interplay of these factors adds to the complexity of the process. History tells us of leaders who have myths built around them and who have had up to this very day their reputations contested. Sometimes, and by some, these leaders are called nation builders, mass murderers, usurpers etc. Their memory lives on and so does the controversy surrounding them. The course book, Reputations deals with Cleopatra and Stalin as examples. Choose one such iconic “leader” (do NOT choose Cleopatra or Stalin) and discuss the issues involved in process of his/her reputation formation. Pay attention to the factors that could have contributed to his/her contested reputation and the role historical sources are made to operate. First, you should read to build your understanding of the complex theme of reputation before focusing your attention on material that would help you address the subthemes numbered 1-5 below, as they apply to the leader of your choice:     


1) Identify the issues involved in setting the “leader” in his/her historical context.
